What do you get when you cross science-based learning initiatives with individualized learning support? Academics West calls it metacognitive learning.
Academics West, based in Manhattan, is not a private school, per se. Rather, it is a scientifically based learning methodology that can be used to reach a variety of students with a variety of different learning styles. The program offers several types of services for private school environments, public schools, and even homeschooling families.
Services offered by Academics West include:
- Clinically Informed Tutoring - Students are assigned an academic coach to help them develop stronger academic skills based on the student’s learning style in collaboration with an educational psychologist.
- Learning Style Profile – An educational psychologist assesses the student to gain insight into that student’s learning style.
- Academic Tutoring – Subject matter experts tutor students on specific subjects based on the student’s learning style.
- College Guidance – Assist students in finding the right college and supporting the student’s academic goals.
- Supervised Learning Lab - A quiet space students can go to for academic work.
- ADHD and Executive Functioning Coaching – Academics West will work with K-12 and college students to gain better focus and concentration skills.
- School-Based Shadows – Shadows have advanced educational degrees and assist students with behavioral modifications to help them become more successful students.
- Coach-In-Residence Program - Intense learning support at home.
- Home School/Therapeutic Home Program – Following the Common Core Standards, students get an individualized learning plan and sometimes meet in a classroom setting with other students in the program.
- Wrap-A-Round Support – A support mechanism for dealing with difficult children while providing them with academic support.
- Credit Recovery Program - A program that works in tandem with schools to provide expelled students a way to receive academic credit while not in class.
- Standardized Test Prep - Helps students prepare for mandatory standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT.
- GED Practice Test – Students seeking a GED can take a practice test to measure their skills and knowledge.
Academics West seeks to improve personal and academic functioning of students through invention programs that address emotional, behavioral, and academic concerns through a scientific approach.
